Policies

Privacy policy.

What we collect, why we collect it, who sees it and the choices you have.

Draft for legal review. This policy was written for Altara Research and has not yet been approved by a lawyer. It must be reviewed and approved by counsel before launch. The assumptions it makes are listed at the end.

1. About this policy

This policy explains what personal information Altara Research LLC, trading as Altara Research ("we", "us"), collects through altararesearch.com (the "Site"), our accounts, orders and messages, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

We are responsible for the personal information described here. If you have a question about it, contact us using the details at the end of this policy.

2. Information you give us

  • Contact and order details: your name, email address, shipping and billing addresses, and, if you choose to give it, your phone number.
  • Account details: your email address and password. We store only a hashed form of your password, never the password itself.
  • Your confirmations: your confirmation that you are 21 or older and a qualified researcher or buying for a research organization, and your acceptance of our Terms, recorded with the Terms version and the time on our server.
  • Wholesale applications: your organization, your role, its website, a description of its research, and expected order volume.
  • Messages: what you send us through our contact form, help requests or email.
  • Marketing signups: your email address, and your phone number if you opt in to texts, with a record of when and how you gave consent.

Please do not send us health information about yourself or anyone else. We do not need it and do not ask for it.

3. Information we create or collect automatically

  • Order history and reward points: what you ordered, when, what you paid, shipping and tracking status, and your points balance.
  • A salted hash of your IP address: when you submit a form or an order, we store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address rather than the address itself. We use it to detect abuse, such as repeated fraudulent orders, without keeping a readable IP address.
  • Server logs: our hosting provider records basic technical information about requests to the Site, such as the time, the page requested, and browser and network details, to keep the Site running and secure.
  • Cookies and browser storage: described in section 5.

We also receive limited information from service providers, such as confirmation from the payment processor that a payment succeeded or failed, and tracking updates from carriers.

4. What we do not collect

  • Card numbers. Card payments are handled by a third-party payment processor. We do not see or store your full card number.
  • Advertising and analytics tracking. No advertising pixels, analytics tools or third-party tracking tags are installed on the Site at present.

If we decide to add any advertising, analytics or tracking tool, we will update this policy, and change its date, before the tool is added.

5. Cookies and browser storage

We use a small number of cookies, all of which are needed for the Site to work as described:

  • Researcher confirmation cookie: records that you confirmed your age and research purpose, so we do not ask again on every page.
  • Session cookie: a signed cookie that keeps you signed in to your account.
  • Signed-in cookie: a small cookie that tells the Site you are signed in, so it can show the right menu. It contains no account details.
  • Tester cookie: used only by our own staff when testing the Site. Customers never receive it.

Your cart is kept in your browser's local storage, on your own device, until you place an order or clear it. If you block cookies or clear browser storage, the Site may ask for your confirmation again, sign you out, or empty your cart.

6. How we use your information

  • to create and manage your account;
  • to process, review, ship and support your orders, including payments, refunds, returns and carrier claims;
  • to check your age and research-use confirmation, and to keep a record of it and of your acceptance of our Terms;
  • to review wholesale applications and manage wholesale accounts;
  • to run the rewards program;
  • to answer your messages and help requests;
  • to send transactional emails about your account and orders;
  • to send marketing email or texts, only if you have opted in;
  • to prevent fraud and abuse, keep the Site secure, and enforce our Terms and Research use policy;
  • to meet our tax, accounting, legal and compliance obligations, and to respond to lawful requests from authorities.

7. Who we share it with

We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the business, and only what each one needs for its job:

  • Website hosting and edge functions (Cloudflare), which serves the Site and runs the code that handles forms, accounts and checkout.
  • Order management, a WooCommerce back office run on a managed hosting provider, where orders, accounts and records are kept.
  • Our fulfillment partner, which packs and ships orders and receives your name, shipping address, phone number and the contents of your order.
  • Our payment processor, which handles card payments under its own privacy terms.
  • Our email delivery provider, which sends our transactional and, if you opted in, marketing emails.
  • Carriers, which receive the details needed to deliver your order.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to respond to a valid legal request, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or to investigate suspected misuse of our products. If our business is sold or reorganized, personal information may pass to the new owner under the commitments in this policy.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not give or sell your phone number or text message consent to anyone for their own marketing.

8. Marketing email and text messages

We send marketing email only if you opt in when you sign up or at checkout. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe by emailing us. Unsubscribing does not stop transactional emails about your orders.

We send marketing texts only if you give separate consent at checkout, where we show this disclosure: you agree to receive recurring automated marketing text messages at the number you provide; consent is not a condition of purchase; message frequency varies; msg & data rates may apply; reply STOP to opt out or HELP for help. We keep a record of when and how you gave consent.

9. Your choices and rights

We give every customer in the United States the following choices, whatever state you live in:

  • Access: ask what personal information we hold about you and receive a copy.
  • Correction: ask us to correct information that is wrong. You can also update most account details yourself on the account page.
  • Deletion: ask us to delete your personal information and close your account.
  • Opt out: unsubscribe from marketing email or texts at any time.

To make a request, email support@altararesearch.com from the email address on your account, or use our contact form. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request. We aim to respond within 45 days.

You may ask someone you trust to make a request for you. We may ask for proof that they have your permission, and may confirm the request with you directly.

Browser privacy signals. Because we do not sell or share personal information, there is currently nothing for a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal to opt you out of. If that ever changes, we will treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a request to opt out, and we will say so in this policy first.

Some information cannot be deleted straight away. We keep order records, research-use confirmations and Terms acceptance records for as long as we need them for tax, legal and compliance purposes, as described in section 11. When we cannot delete something, we will tell you why. We will not treat you differently for making a request.

10. Why we keep your research-use confirmation

Your confirmation that you are 21 or older and buying for laboratory research, and your acceptance of our Terms, are part of the record of each order. We keep them so that we can show who bought a product and on what basis, answer questions from payment providers, carriers or authorities, and enforce our Research use policy. We record the version of the Terms you accepted and the time on our server, rather than relying on the clock on your device, so that the record is reliable.

11. How long we keep information

  • Order records, including your research-use confirmation and Terms acceptance: for as long as needed for tax, legal and compliance purposes, which we currently expect to be 7 years after the order.
  • Account details and reward points: while your account is open. After it is closed, we delete or de-identify what we no longer need, other than order records.
  • Wholesale applications: while the account is open, or for a limited period after an application is declined.
  • Messages and help requests: for as long as needed to resolve them and keep a record of the outcome.
  • Marketing consent records: for as long as we need to show that consent was given, including after you unsubscribe, so that we do not contact you again.
  • Hashed IP addresses and server logs: for a limited period, as needed to detect abuse and keep the Site secure.

12. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information, including encrypted connections, hashed passwords, signed session cookies, and access limited to the people and providers who need it. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of information sent over the internet. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as the law requires.

13. Minors

The Site and our products are not for anyone under 21. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 21. If you believe a minor has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

14. Where information is processed

We sell only within the United States, and we process personal information in the United States. Our hosting provider serves the Site from a global network, so technical data may pass through servers outside the United States in the course of delivering pages.

15. Links to other websites

Our testing page and product pages link to the websites of the independent laboratories, so that you can verify a report with them directly. Those websites, and any payment page shown by our payment processor, are run by other organizations under their own privacy policies. This policy does not cover them, and we encourage you to read theirs.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The date at the top of this page shows when it last changed. If we make a significant change, such as adding a tracking tool or a new kind of service provider, we will update this policy before the change takes effect.

Assumptions in this draft

Each of these was chosen so the policy reads as a whole, not because the business confirmed it. Every one needs checking before launch.

  • The domain altararesearch.com is assumed and not yet confirmed.
  • No advertising pixels, analytics or third-party tracking tags are installed as of October 9, 2026. This policy must be updated, in the same change, before any are added.
  • The business is assumed to be below the thresholds of every US state comprehensive privacy law as of 2026, so rights are granted voluntarily and no statute is named. This should be rechecked as the business grows.
  • A 45-day response time for privacy requests is assumed.
  • Order records are assumed to be kept for 7 years for tax, legal and compliance purposes.
  • Retention periods for hashed IP addresses, server logs, declined wholesale applications and messages have not been set.
  • The payment processor, the managed hosting provider for the back office and the email delivery provider have not been chosen or named.
  • The fulfillment partner is assumed to receive only name, shipping address, phone number and order contents.
  • Personal information is assumed to be processed in the United States, apart from content delivery through the hosting provider's global network.
  • The SMS program may not be live at launch. Carrier registration is required and may be declined for this product category.
  • The checkout is assumed to show the SMS disclosure exactly as summarized here, and to record the time and source of consent.
  • Closing an account is assumed not to delete order records that must be retained.
  • Global Privacy Control signals are assumed to be honored as an opt-out if the store ever sells or shares personal information. No such signal handling is built today.
